Slipper Orchids
|
The genera Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, and Cypripedium are popularly referred to as "slipper orchids" for the shape of the pouch-like lower petal. Paphiopedilums are found in the wild in much of the tropical areas of SE Asia and the East Indies. The genus Phragmidpedium has a native habit ranging from Mexico through Brazil. Cypripediums, which are the most difficult of the three to grow in a greenhouse environment are found in temperate regions of North America, Europe, Asia, and Japan. Though generally similar in appearance, growing conditions vary widely. |
