Dendrobium

This genus with over a thousand species, widely varying in appearance, range from India throughout most of eastern Asia, the East Indies, Australia, and New Zealand.  Dendrobiums come from a wide range of habitats and climates, making it a real challenge to do right by them in a greenhouse.  Species of  other genera of the same sub-tribe are shown on this page.

dlod.jpg (37623 bytes) Dendrobium loddigessii. A dwarf plant from Laos and China. dpre.jpg (60349 bytes) Dendrobium prenticei. This miniature mat-forming species is found in northeast Australia growing on rocks and tree branches. The flowers are about 5 millimeters in diameter.
dsec.jpg (47781 bytes) Dendrobium secundum. An epiphyte found abundantly throughout SE Asia, Borneo, and the Philippines. The common color is a deep wine red. This particular plant is a color variation.  dsec1.jpg (43037 bytes) Dendrobium secundum. A closeup of  the individual blooms which measure about 6 mm when open.
dvre.jpg (47870 bytes) Dendrobium victoria-reginae.This beautiful plant is native to the mountains of the Philippines.  dvre1.jpg (81027 bytes) Dendrobium victoria-reginae.  Each year, new leaves appear on new canes while blooms appear on the old canes.
dkin.jpg (71678 bytes) Dendrobium kingianum. A native of the eastern states of Australia, D. kingianum is one of the most abundant orchids among growers. A cool to intermediate cool grower, it prospers with a dry cool winter and a shaded wet summer. dkin1.jpg (38753 bytes) Dendrobium kingianum.  A close-up of the flowers.  A lithophyte (grows on rocks), the kingianum is found in a wide variety of sizes and hues.
dstr.jpg (36613 bytes) Dockrillia striolata. This is a guess on the identity of this plant. I purchased it as Dockrillia mortii from a dealer but, as often happens, the bloom indicated an ID mistake somewhere along the line. In any case, this dwarf plant is found growing in profusion on rocky cliffs in temperate areas of Australia. dpri.jpg (43722 bytes) Dendrobium primulinum Native to India and S. Asia. During the winter (dry season) water is withheld and the plant sheds most or all it's leaves. When new growth begins in the spring, new canes bear leaves and the old canes bear flowers.
denwhlight.jpg (39088 bytes) Dendrobium White Lightning 'Snow Storm' x Waianae Blush 'Nobuko'. An hybrid  with a more impressive name than flower in my opinion. dencp.jpg (39020 bytes) Dendrobium Crystal Pink (D. Sailor Boy x D. Ise). An hybrid.
dswa.jpg (43835 bytes) Dendrobium Swallow. An hybrid. dthosapol.jpg (45926 bytes) Dendrobium Thailand Thosapol. A recent commercial hybrid from the Thai orchid industry.
